The thing about trying to make it in the marketing industry is that you need to think a little bit out of the box. By nature, this industry is more on the creative and inventive side. If you're able to bring in new ways of thinking and adapting, chances are that you'll be able to get further ahead in your dream marketing career.

Remember, the working world has changed quite drastically over the past decade, leaning more into digital jobs and homeworking.

This article aims to shed light on how you can get ahead in your dream marketing career, with helpful tips and tricks that you can try to implement into your everyday life.

Upskilling: try to do additional marketing courses

Whether you're somebody who is just starting your marketing career because you have just received your marketing diploma or degree or you've got years of experience behind you, you must always upskill.

This generally means improving your skills and knowledge around a certain topic. The best way that you can do this is to try to add additional marketing courses to you every day. This might be a short course, where you complete one hour per evening on how the marketing world is changing. As the world moves into the fifth industrial revolution, the way marketers promote products and services will change. This is something that you need to be aware of to stay ahead.

Apply to the top firms with a great CV

Another way that you can get ahead is by applying for marketing roles at innovative and forward-thinking firms. A lot of people think that all their learning will be done ‘on the job’. But, if you're not at a firm that encourages creativity and invention, you're not going to get ahead. Therefore, you need to identify firms that you admire, who are doing amazing things in the marketing sphere and then apply for those jobs.

When it comes to the application side of things, try to create a marketing CV that works with your own personal brand image and voice but is also interesting to look at, easy to read and perfectly summarises your past years of experience and education.

Create a niche and voice for yourself

Another way to get ahead is by immersing yourself in the topic of marketing. As you know, marketing is a massive umbrella term and within marketing, there are a lot of niches. If you really want to set yourself apart, you need to create a voice for yourself within this industry. Say, for example, you are convinced that the best way for a business to market itself is through social media, then, you need to become an expert in social media. This will allow you to become an authority on a topic.

Don't forget the power of social media

As mentioned above, you need to recognise that the world has become a lot more digital. This means that you need to stay up to date with digital developments. You can try to learn more about social media to help you in this. However, even if social media is not your strong point, you need to remember that you have to have a social media presence to some extent. This doesn’t mean you need a TikTok or Snapchat account. However, you should have a presence on business social media avenues such as LinkedIn.

You should work to create a stand-out LinkedIn profile so that you can post about any achievements that you've had at work, create a business network and apply for new jobs. LinkedIn is a great platform for you to use, where like-minded professionals are chatting in the industry and a space for you to keep up-to-date with changes in the marketing world.

Try to think outside the box

Last, but certainly not least, is the importance of trying to think outside the box. As you can see, all of the tips above stress the importance of being unique and developing something that makes you stand out as a marketer. Therefore, if you want to be a successful marketer, you need to do more than just apply the 4 P's of marketing. You need to think out of the box. You need to try to understand what is going on in the industry, apply your own experience and then find ways to reinvent the wheel.

Well, there you have it. These are our tips for you to take with you on your marketing career, to hopefully make it more interesting. If you try these five ideas and see where they take you, you'll be able to adjust as you move forward to craft a marketing guideline that works for you.
